HYDRUS

HYDRUS
HYDRUS
Hebr. saraph, serpentis genus consideratione dignissimum, cum et Christi typus fuerit, Num. c. 21. v. 9. et Ioh. c. 3. v. 14. Angelorumque nobilissimos habeat cognomines, Es. c. 6. v. 2. Accedit, quod serpentum solus volare legitur, Idem c. 14. v. 29. Alitur potissimum in Arabia deserta et Aegypto, nomenque ab ustione habet: seu propter colorem igneum, quem expresserit aeneus serpens, secundum Vatablum: vel, quia flatu et morsu adurit. Aliter Chersydrus dicitur: Qui enim hydrus hieme fuerat, dum aqua erat in lacunis, postquam ea defecit aestu, in sicco degere cogitur, atque ita fit Chersydrus, h. e. hydrus εν χέρσῳ, in sicco degens: quo tempore, infestante siti, in calidis regionibus virus multo nocentius habet et acrius. Virg. Georg. l. 3. v. 432. et seqq.
Postquam exusta palus, terraeque ardore dehiscunt,
Exsilit in siccum et flammantia lumina torquens,
Saevit agris, asperque siti, atque exterritus aestu.
Itaque tum morsu suo adurit, quidquid attingit: unde hoc igne consumptum fuisse Herculem poetae fingunt, cum vestem induisset Hydrae Lerneae veneno tinctam, Ovid. Met. l. 9. v. 69. et 159. Seneca in Hercule Oeteo, Act. 4. v. 1216. Sophocles in Trachiniis, Alii. Verius, ab hoc serpentum genere Isaelitas in deserto morsos fuisse, Num. c. 21. v. 6. Misit Dominus in populum serpentes SERAPHIM: qua de plaga, alique huc pertinentia, vide apud Sam. Bochart. Hieroz. Parte post, L. III. c. 13.
